  • When Hiring Professionals

Important Questions You Need To Ask...

You may know that contractors should be licensed, but do you know which license applies and how to verify it? Here’s what you need to know: every home improvement contractor in MA and CT is legally required to register with the state. You can easily check a contractor's license status (links below). Taking a moment to verify their status allows you to see any active license and complaint history.

Hiring a licensed professional is essential—consumer protections don’t apply if you work with an unlicensed provider. Don’t get burned—do your homework!

When comparing service providers, here are 11 key questions to ask. In most cases, we’ll often offer the lowest price among contractors who can answer "yes" to each of these important questions.

Paint Perfect is proud to say YES to each and every one of these important questions!

    1. Have you been in business for over 30 years?

Use this lookup tool to verify a business's registration with the Secretary of State. If a company’s name doesn’t appear, consider if you’re comfortable working with a provider not listed in the state database.

    2. Are all workmen on the job site W2 employees (not subcontractors)?

In Massachusetts, most workers are legally considered employees, with rights to minimum wage, overtime, and other protections. Misclassification of employees as subcontractors is illegal and can result in penalties. Unfortunately, some contractors do this to cut costs, which could mean workers at your home may lack proper insurance coverage.

    3. Do you have a certificate of insurance showing Workers' Comp, Liability, and Auto coverage?

Click here to view our insurance certificates. We recommend requesting all three coverages from any contractor.

    4. Do you have a MA and CT Home Improvement Contractor registration in good standing?

Use the lookup tools for MA or CT to confirm license status, standing, and complaint history. Remember: It’s illegal to perform residential home improvement work without proper registration.
